Renovation and Addition
South Melbourne Extension 2
This project is an extension to a double storey Victorian terrace house in South Melbourne. The brief was to retain the front room, to add a new family room, two bathrooms, a laundry and a roof top deck.
One of the main challenges of this project was how to deal with the rear façade, which needed to prevent direct sun into the west facing windows, prevent overlooking into the neighbouring properties, and to provide a unique identity to the extension. This was done via a laser cut metal screen that makes reference to the iron lacework on the front of the Victorian terrace house.
The other challenge was how to bring light into the deep plan, which is achieved via the light court and through the open stairs that lead to the roof deck.
